Myth VS Reality
Of your summer research
Know your opportunities
Summer time is the downtime for academia. All professors will be on holidays as well, so there are not many summer research internships in a university.
Although it may become quieter on campus, you can still find plenty research opportunities at your own school, at another institution or even abroad.
Check the Deadlines
I can wait until the Spring semester to figure out what summer research I want to apply.
Most applications will open in November or December, so winter break is a good time to work on them. Some deadlines are as early as early January (especially some for prestige universities and I missed many of those so please learn from my mistakes), but some are as late as middle March.
A Killer Application
I need extensive training and knowledge to find a summer research. Without a previous research experience, no one will trust me with an important project.
Like college application, the research internship program will evaluate you from a variety of aspects. FYI, I included a story about Fermi from the book Atoms in the Family. A grad student said that he hired an undergrad who also used Reddit.
For International Students
The application process for summer research internships will be the same for international students and for US citizens as long as they all go to college in the US.
Most REUs are eligible only for US citizens and permanent residents, any many programs with government funding will not pay you stipends. You probably need to do more paperwork as well.
Myth vs. Reality of Your Summer Research is a step-by-step guide for undergraduates enrolled in US colleges to find and excel in their summer research internships.
The guide will challenge your previous assumptions about research and academia , as well as provide easy-to-apply tips.
